Game Review

Mortal Kombat II is the second installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise, developed by Midway games and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1993.

This sequel is just one of the reasons that Mortal Kombat became one of the most successful fighting game franchises in the history of gaming. Originally released for arcades, it was later ported to PC, Amiga and many other platforms. This title brings back fond memories of me losing constantly and getting mad and storming off. This genre was never my strong suit, but that didn’t stop me from trying.

The game picks up where the first one left off and expands upon the Mortal Kombat universe. After failing to defeat Liu Kang in the first mortal kombat tournament, the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung has managed to convince his master, Shao Khan, the supreme ruler of Outworld and the surrounding kingdoms to spare his life. Kang tells his master they should host another tournament in Outworld, forcing the Earthrealm contestants to participate again. Shao Khan agrees and sends the invitation to Raiden, thunder god and Earthrealm protector. Raiden in turn gathers his warriors and takes them to Outworld. This installment of the games features some familiar faces as well as newcomers to the franchise. With the home field advantage, Outworld has a few surprises for their contestants.

This game features the same side-scrolling view as the first one. However, Mortal Kombat II improves upon the gameplay of its precursor, adding new moves and more varied fatalities. Including a few non-lethal alternatives to the classic fatality. MK II keeps up on the tradition of controversial violence and gore and we wouldn’t have it any other way. This game experienced an unprecedented commercial success upon its release, managing to earn more acclaim and awards than the original. Among its accolades are Best Fighting Game, Best Genesis Fighting Game and Best SNES Fighting Game. It is also featured in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die. Violence, blood, gore, hot babes, what’s not to love?

The game you've been dying to see is finally here! Mortal Kombat II has arrived for the Super NES, Genesis, Game Gear, and Game Boy and EGM gives you the first look at this ultra-hot title.

Mortal Kombat II has been in the works for quite some time now and it still isn't finished at the time of this writing. All the characters that made the arcade version such a hit are back for more. You will find all the characters in the Genesis and Super NES versions and there is no final word on which characters, if any, will be eliminated from the portable Game Boy and Game Gear versions. From everything we've seen, this game looks like it will rival all previous versions.

The backgrounds are drawn with the same attention to detail as the arcade. Nice touches like the flying dragons in the background of the Kombat Tomb will dazzle you in the 16-Bit versions. Nothing has been finalized as to whether or not the Random Character Select feature will be in, but it's our strong guess that this option will be there since it's quite popular among the arcade crowds.

There's just so much to talk about that we've devoted five pages to it! Within these pages you'll find pictures of the game for all the systems and learn about what makes this version a near clone to the arcade. So get set for another look at the game that's been tearing up the arcades for many months now, Mortal Kombat II. Only this time the battle takes place in your home.

Mortal Kombat caused quite an uproar when it first appeared in arcades in October of 1992. Its graphic display of violence caused many parents to prohibit their children from playing such a 'nasty' game. But when the game hit the homefront in September of 1993, the result was a smashing success. Having released all four versions of the game on the same day, Acclaim pulled off something nobody thought could be done. Hot off the heels of that triumph comes their home versions of Mortal Kombat II. Originally released in the arcades around October of 1993, this sequel took the original gore-fest further with seven new characters, multipie fatalities, and the incredible babalities and friendships. That, coupled with many hidden secrets, kept gamers content for months on end. Everyone who ever played the arcade version of MK2 couldn't help but wonder how the home editions would turn out.

Well, here they are and they look even better than the original MK home versions. With a total of twelve characters, seven totally new, all those who've mastered the arcade edition will have no problem picking up a controller and performing every killer combo that made this game so great.

All the stages, pits, Bosses, and hidden characters are here. Perform Pit fatalities, take on Kintaro and Shao Kahn in the final battle, and meet up with hidden characters like Smoke and Jade. What does the future hold for Mortal Kombat? Will there be new combatants to take on and mutilate? Will there be a barrage of upgrades offering new features to test the might of future warriors? Hmmm...

Mortal Mania will be here sooner than you think and from these pictures you can tell it's going to be a scorcher on every platform. Looking through the various system pix, you can see that all the graphic elements have been reproduced as close as a cartridge can come to the arcade. Each character has retained the special moves and skills that made him/her favorites in the arcades. The question on all the minds of hard-core Mortal folks is whether it's going to play the same. The first Mortal Kombat played close to the arcade and only experts will be able to tell whether Reptile's Acid Spit is fast enough, Scorpion can still get an Uppercut out of a leg take down, and uppercut Kung Lao after a teleport move. This critical timing is expected to be as close to the arcade as possible. The correct timing of moves is the key to the successful game play and strategy that coin-op players have developed. Our sources ensure us that the programmers have gone to great lengths to make even the pros feel challenged. This is no ordinary fighting game you're dealing with!

The other big question people are dying to know is whether the secrets that have made this game immortal will be in all the versions. Throughout all these pictures there are no fatalities, pits, friendships, or babalities. Are they holding back? You bet! We're told that the carts will be packed with secrets! Some of the lower Meg formats may have to make a few sacrifices, but don't doubt for a minute that all the 'finishing' moves will be in full color and full gore! Obviously there are no inherent problems with the friendship or babality moves, but you know there's going to have to be a few codes or tricks to allow some of the infamous bloody fatalities. In addition to the secret finishing moves, look for some of the hidden characters such as Smoke or Jade in the higher Meg carts. Only time will tell if the three hidden characters and the finishing moves can be reproduced in their entirety. On the same note, we can't forget the big N's anti-blood stance and that alone is sure to add variety to the fatalities. Just think of the way they got around the blood issue before. Have you noticed that none of the pictures shown so far depict any blood! Remember these are early photos and the blood might have been left out for the preview, but you can expect all versions to have gore or some kind of substitute along the line of the first version. Rest assured--the companies tell us that all versions were crammed so full of MK2 material that people won't believe what they were able to reproduce. From the preview thus far you can tell the quality of the game play has been kept intact. Be prepared to get blown away with the superior reproductions on all formats, including all the secrets, blood, and combos that have made this super sequel the talk of the arcades. Mortal Kombat II will be knocking down your door soon!

People say:

Mortal Kombat II for the Genesis looks a lot better compared to the first game, and the control is about the same The graphics, however, am also mproved. The sounds could have been added in, though. Only a few sounds are really there I miss when Raiden roars, and everything is muffled. For me this was a good conversion, but also check out the other versions. It is a great game nevertheless.

Despite the obvious cofor and sound limitations of the Genesis, Mortal Kombat II comes off in an excellent way because It has the strongest lector going for it: play control. The great control really helps to offset the lack of voices and the strange sound effect choices. Overall, this version will no doubt keep Genesis owners happy. But sorry guys, now you aren't the only ones to get the blood and guts action like before.

Genesis owners will have much to cheer about with one of the most highly anticipated games of the year Mortal Kombat II is nearly identical to the arcade in every respect. Remember, I said nearly. Although the graphics are good, they are slightly inferior to the Super NES. The same goes with the music, sound effects, speech, and game play. Overall, this is probably the best fighting game for the Genesis.

You have to face some of the limitations of the Genesis. If you do, you'll have to admit that MK II is a great translation If you compare it to the Super NES, sure it isn't quite as detailed or coforful, but it is good nonetheless. Play control is a bit lighter on this platform but controls well enough to get some heated battles going. Genesis owners should check it out, it is definitely one of the best fighting games for the system.

I Love You, You Love me...Splat!

We all knew that the only way to make Mortal Kombat better was to add new characters and new moves. The designers could have taken the easy way out and made Mortal Kombat II a bloodless, watered-down sequel to the first game. Or they could have gone overboard in the other direction and made every single move blood soaked and nasty. Instead they showed sheer brilliance by bringing in new characters with challenging new moves, including the hilarious Babalities and Friendship moves. These moves are often more difficult to throw than the original—and new— Fatalities, and they add some wacky humor to this top-rate fighting title. And though we understand that the designers didn't put them in as any kind of political statement, the Babalities and Friendship moves do point out the fact that a good Fighting title doesn't have to depend on gore to be good (though the gore can be kinda cool). Mortal Kombat II may carry an MA-17 rating, but there's much more to it than gruesome Fatalities.

Overview

OK, OK; we know you've been waiting for it. We know you've been wondering whether or not the Fatalities, Babalities, and Friendship moves would be in. You've asked what the rating would be. We know you want to know 'cuz we have about 100,000 letters that say so! So here's the official news: Mortal Kombat II is coming to Genesis this fall. It's going to be big and bad...full of Fatalities, Babalities, and the awesome Friendship moves. Featuring the new characters with their new moves. And all the action you've come to expect from Mortal Kombat on Genesis.

Mortal II on Game Gear Too

The trademark moves of the Genesis version will appear on the Game Gear as well.

The Game Gear version delivers a particularly nasty fatality for Reptile.

New Kids on the Block

Mortal Kombat fans will find the original cast ready to do battle along with some new faces. Headlining the newcomers is a youthful version of ShangTsung, who impacts your screen with two Fatality moves and the newly famous Rainbow Joy Friendship move. Kitana and Mileena are two new female characters with particularly gruesome Fatalities and Friendship moves that feature cakes and flowers. Kung Lau looks like a cross between Rayden and Liu Kang. If he tips his hat to you, it will be the last thing you ever see.. .unless he pulls a rabbit out of it. For pure ugliness and bad attitude, Baraka can't be beat. His long spurs stick and slice. He might even give you a present. You can play as the hidden character from the first Mortal Kombat, Reptile. If the game follows the arcade format, you might find hidden characters as well.

Now it's official. You know that Mortal Kombat IIis on the way. Look to a future issue of Sega Visions for an in-depth strategy guide to beating this awesome game.

Jax has a mean throw. Who is battling in the distance?

Sub-Zero can now flame ice across the ground.

Even though Jax and Baraka got it going on, the real action is in the background, to the left of the faced tree. Who's the green ninja?

Jax gets ready to give Reptile a broken back. Youch.

Shao Khan is another spectacular new character.

Even though you can now play as Rep tile, Kintaro is an unplayable boss character from Goro's realm.

Baraka gets ready to unleash his spinning blade move.

Baraka is just a kid at heart. But he's still ugly.

Eight Kilter Komnatants:

  1. Nope, they couldn't get the whole arkade game into the Game Gear version, but they did yeoman's work and got darned close. You get to play with eight skull-krack-ing kombatants. Choose from Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Mileena, Scorpion, Jax, Reptile, and Shang Tsung. You get their regular Mortal moves, you get their incredibly final Fatality moves, and you even get to impale the loser of your choice on the spikes. MKII Game Gear has even managed to pack in some of the arkade's hidden features, like the battle with Jade. This is a more-than-solid portable rendition of one of the hottest Fighting games of the decade, and it looks great on your Game Gear—colorful, large sprites and detailed backgrounds. Kommit mayhem, in portable form—it kicks keister.
  2. How about a little high-voltage punishment with Jax's Energy Wave? Tap Down, Away, and Kick to blast ‘em.
  3. Shred some kombatant with Kitana's Fan Throw by hitting Toward, Toward, and Punch and Kick (simultaneously).
  4. Choose your im-mortal fighter at the Character Select screen.

Overview:

Road warriors, prepare. Prepare for maximum Mortal madness. Prepare for one-or two-player (Gear-to-Gear) karnage. Mortal Kombat II for Game Gear from Acclaim Entertainment busts loose the to-go Fatalities and Mortal Moves for the small screen. Choose from eight kombatants in three backgrounds, search for hidden characters, and go for the explosive finishing moves on your way to whupping Kintaro. At an MA-17 rating, this product may be too gory for younger audiences, but older gamers get all the moves (and the Mood) in a solid little portable cart.

Hot Hint's:

  1. Each of the fighters uses the same move to spike opponents -Toward, Away, Toward, and Punch.
  2. Mileena is the most well-rounded fighter. She's quick and can attack both in the air and on the ground.
  3. Shang Tsung has the most moves and can counter virtually anything.
  4. If you're good with the morphs and all the characters.
  5. Use the Block button consistently and attack only when fairly certain of the outcome.
  6. Let computer fighters inside sweep range, and they come in quickly for a cheap throw.

Finding and Fighting Jade:

  1. To fight the elusive Jade, win the preceding two-match round (just before question mark on Battle Plan) by using only your Kick button. When the next round starts, you'll warp to Goro's Lair for the battle with Jade. Watch her —she's quick and cheap.
  2. Get their attention with Reptile's Force Ball by tapping Away, Away, Punch and Kick (simultaneously).
  3. Your opponent will definitely get the point(s) with Mileena's Sai Throw. Do it yourself by holding Punch for two seconds.
  4. Go for a bit of fighter fishing with Scorpion's Spear by hitting Away, Away, and Punch.

A Karnival of Kombatants:

Mortal Kombat 2 gives you seven new lighters. The guy with the teeth and mighty slicing blades is Baraka. Kung Lan is the fella with the steel-banded buzz-saw hat. Blue-masked Kitana is plenty handy with her fans. Mileena carries a pair of Sai. Jax is the burly bare-chested guy with powerful fists. Green ol' acid-spitting Reptile is now fully playable. Shang 1 sung is back in playable morph-ready form. You'll find two of the original characters from the first MK conspicuously unplayable and missing—Kano and Sonya Blade — but you'll see them chained in the background in one of the stages. Of the five remaining original characters, each has at least one new Mortal move (in addition to new Fatalities, Friendships, and Bahalities). Scorpion has his new Scissor Takedown and Air Throw. Hayden has his amped-up Electrocute. Johnny (age does a new Shadow Uppercut and has both high and low Fireballs. Sub-Zero now has a terrific Ground Freeze. And Liu Kang can now toss low and high Fireball attacks.

This Blood s FOP YOU:

So what about the Finishing moves? Well, you've got six minimum per character. Once you learn the motions for the Dead Pool, they're good for all the fighters. Kvery kombatant has an individual move that works in both the Pit II stage and the Tomb (spikes). Each fighter can also execute a Friendship, a Babality, and two final and fearsome Fatalities.

When you hear 'Finish him!' and your opponent is swaying on his feet, a Friendship might make paper dolls or grow a flower for your enemy. The Babalities send your foes back to their days of burping up pablum and messing diapers. The moves are strong on horror-movie-style gore, go heavy on the wet sound effects, and take talent and timing to accomplish. Go for Scorpion's fiery Toasty with the great 'toasty' digitized voice, pop a cranium with Jax's Fist Clap, or throw Sub-Zero's Super Ice to bust his foes into flying chunks of frozen human bits. With all the moves, great fighters, and secret characters, Mortal Kombat //approaches immortal proportions.

Overview:

Mortal madness has set in. You want it all, don't you? OK. You've got it. All the moves, all the characters, all the extreme karnage, and all the action are in Mortal Kombat II for the Genesis from Acclaim Entertainment. This one takes you as close as your TV can get to the coin-snatcher version. One or two players get to choose from 12 killer fighters, make si am burger in ten fantastic backgrounds, go for at least six wild Finishing moves per character, and seek battles with three difficult hidden kombatants. Whether you bake your opponents a birthday cake or quick-fry them to a crackly crunch, Mortal mayhem is bigger, better, and (hence the rating) much more bloody the second time around.

If it's in the Arcade, it's in Here.

Attention, Parents: Due to the graphic nature of this title, Mortal Kombat II is an MA-17 game and is not appropriate for all audiences. Sega Visions is featuring unaltered screens to show elements of the game some players may find objectionable. Parents should take a look at the screens shown before deciding that the game is suitable for their children.

Friendships:

  1. If I knew you wuz comin' I'd a baked a cake....Do Kitana's Birthday Cake Friendship by hitting Down, Down, Down, Up, and Low Kick.
  2. Hello Dolly! Well, hello Dolly. It's so nice to have you back where you belong. Sub-Zero otters up a doll-size version of himself in this Friendship by hitting Away, Away, Down, and High Kick.
  3. Get down. Boogie, oogie, oogie. Liu Kang rejoins the seventies in his Disco Ball Friendship by tapping Toward, Away, Away, Away, and Low Kick.
  4. Somewhere over the rainbow... Check out Shang Tsung's Rainbow by tapping Away, Away, Down, Toward, and High Kick.

Hot Hint's:

  1. Mileena is the best overall fighter. Slices got sweep, speed, and reach as well as projectile speed in the air and on the ground; she can teleport away from opposing pro jectiles; and she gets in the hits.
  2. Jax can be considered the second-best fighter. He's got the best offense. His slow movement and less-tl tan pow.
  3. Leam your moves and kombos against a nonexistent second player. This gives you time to figure out the moves without being attacked and maimed.
  4. Play 250 battles with a friend or against the computer. When you reach number 250, the Mortal Madness pauses for a quick seven point game of Pong!
  5. You can use the Block button while doing any fatality. This keeps you from flailing about and hitting the enemy before completion of the move.
  6. Each Fatality has its proper range. Some art' face to face, others are within sweep distance, and still others are a full screen away. Try them at various distances if you can't get them to work.

Babalities:

  1. Johnny Cage makes Baraka wish he'd brought a pacifier. Do Cage's Babality by hitting Away, Away, Away, and High Kick.
  2. Mileena wore the purple mask even when she was a squalling little curtain climber. Zap ‘em with Kitana's Babality by hitting Down, Down, Down, and Low Kick.
  3. Doesn't itsy-bitsy widdle Rayden look nice in his cute widdle hat? Do Liu Kang's Babality by tapping Down, Down, Toward, Away, and Low Kick.
  4. Jax looks like he needs his nappies changed. You'd fill them too if Sub-Zero tagged you with his Babality. Infantize your opposition by tapping Down, Away, Away, and High Kick.

The Dead Pool:

In the Dead Pool stage, you can Uppercut your opponents into the skin-flaying acid pool in the background and watch their stripped skeletons float past as the Finishing move. All your fighters use the same motions to do this Fatality. Hold Low Kick and Low Punch, get face to face, hold Down, and tap High Punch.

Only on 32X!

Mortal Kombat 2 for 32X absolutely wails. This is what's in store for you:

  1. You get twice the number of colors that were displayed on your Genesis version.
  2. Every killer frame of animation that's in the quarter muncher is here.
  3. All the sounds and voices of the arcade are here...the screams, the kombatants' names, the trademark 'Fight,' and more.
  4. Look for all the incredible introductory sequences.
  5. Want your missing foreground and background graphics back? They're in there.
  6. The speed and the intensity kick serious butt. Just like in the arcade version.
  7. How about all the secrets and hidden features of the upright, including the stages themselves? They're yours.
  8. You get Mortal Kombat II in all its glory — only on 32X!

Enjoy these early screens, beg Visions will give you the whole scoop, including a rundown of the Babalities, Fatalities, Friendships, and Mortal moves in a coming issue.
